The Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy are often interchangeable that may overlap.  Counselling usually refers to brief treatment whereas psychotherapy focuses on working with clients for a longer period of time and draws from insights into emotional problems and difficulties.

Who do you work with?

I work with adults and young people (13+) of all genders and social backgrounds.

How many sessions will be needed?

This differs for each person.  This will be discussed at the initial consultation and reviewed at regular intervals.  Some people find short-term counselling (6 – 12 sessions) helpful, whereas other people prefer a more open-ended, long-term therapeutic approach.

How can counselling/therapy help?

Difficult Life Events – Bereavement, job loss, critical illness.

Relationship problems – Family, partner, colleagues.

Upsetting or traumatic experiences – whether recent or historical

Difficult emotions – grief, guilt, sadness, confusion, anger, frustration or low self-esteem.
